Karl's Friday Herb - Viscum album

*DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME, CONTACT YOUR NEAREST MEDICAL HERBALIST*

Very few plants scream Christmas as Viscum album or Mistletoe, as well as historical associations with druids, but few know it has wonderful health benefits, mainly as a mild relaxant, nerve tonic and hypotensive.

Viscum is a wonderful relaxant which aids (usually alongside other herbs) in the easement of mental, emotional and nervous tension, its not a potent nerve tonic or nervine like Valerian or Skullcap, however it works behind other nervines and increases and broadens the overall effect. However, its very useful in aiding in excitability, insomnia, anxiety and panic attacks

One Viscum constituent is Viscotoxin which is cardio-selective (i.e. works exclusively on the heart) and reduces ventricular rate, so slows the heart rate (AGAIN NO SELF-MEDICATION, PLEASE SEE A MEDICAL HERBALIST), and this allows the heart to fill with more blood before sending to the lungs for oxygen and then the rest off the body. Other cardiovascular effects include the relaxing of the smooth muscle around the arteries so gently lowering blood pressure, and thus helping to ease linked symptoms like angina, tension headaches, migraines, tinnitus, vertigo and face flushing, as well as easing blood flow with patients suffering with arteriosclerosis.

As can be seen this relaxing and nourishing whether of the nerves or muscles, can be used by a skill medical herbalist to aid with mild asthma, painful coughing, stomach and period cramps, certain types of bed-wetting, epilepsy, and the many tight muscular conditions.

Other uses for Viscum are as a diuretic and as a boost to the immune system as some of the constituents especially the polypeptides have been shown to stimulate neutrophil (white blood cells) activity which act like pacman and eat invaders.

Dosage: Not saying, do not take in any dry, fresh or in any dodgy tablet forms from eBay, Amazon or from a friend (GO SEE A MEDICAL HERBALIST AND TALK TO THEM).

Cautions: Obviously only to be used by trained medical herbalists, if unsure about who is advising you ask to see their qualifications and any professional authority, if any they belong to (Look for the CPP or NiMH), if unsure leave and take your health and money somewhere else.

However, just to advise Don't take if pregnant, also medical herbalists might be a little wary using it or use small doses if you are on anti-hypertensive or asthma medications.

Also these pages are not to aid in serious self diagnosis (nothing on the internet is) if concerned about any feeling of illness or discomfort, please contact your GP, dial 111 or visit your nearest medical herbalist (visit www.theccp.uk for the nearest).
